AI Systems Earn Silver Medal at International Math Olympiad Competition

Two Google DeepMind AI systems, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, displayed on screens solving complex mathematical problems at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

On 25 July 2024, two artificial‑intelligence programs created by Google DeepMind—AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2—secured scores that qualified them for silver medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The achievement places the systems ahead of the majority of the teenage participants, trailing only the handful of contestants who earned gold.

The IMO, held each July, brings together the world’s most talented high‑school mathematicians to tackle problems in algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics that often confound even seasoned researchers. Historically, the competition has been a proving ground for human ingenuity, while AI has lingered on the periphery. This year’s result marks a shift, showing that machines can now construct original, valid proofs at a level previously reserved for human competitors.

Mathematics underpins fields such as physics, engineering, finance and logistics. An AI capable of reasoning through unfamiliar mathematical challenges could, in theory, contribute to designing more resilient infrastructure, optimizing supply chains in emergencies, or identifying vulnerabilities in cryptographic systems before they are exploited. The significance therefore extends well beyond academic accolades.

AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 are products of DeepMind, a research organization founded in the United Kingdom in 2010, acquired by Google in 2014, and merged with Google’s Brain division in April 2023. The company now operates research sites across the United States, Canada, France, Germany and Switzerland. DeepMind’s reputation rests on innovations such as the 2014 neural Turing machine architecture, which enables neural networks to read from and write to external memory—mirroring the way humans take notes while solving complex problems.

Traditional machine‑learning models excel at pattern recognition; they can, for example, identify cats after being shown enough images. The IMO, however, tests logical construction rather than pattern matching. Contestants must devise complete, original proof chains, a demand that aligns more closely with the capabilities of DeepMind’s memory‑augmented models. The silver‑medal scores demonstrate that these systems can meet that requirement within a defined mathematical domain.

The competition itself is fiercely demanding. Hundreds of the brightest teenagers from around the globe train for years to compete, and the problems presented are designed to push the limits of creative reasoning. That two AI systems reached silver standard in the same year suggests an accelerating pace of progress in machine reasoning.

For decades, computers have outperformed humans in narrowly defined tasks such as calculation, sorting and searching. Open‑ended reasoning, however, has remained a human stronghold. The IMO result indicates that the boundary between human and machine cognition is narrowing. If AI can achieve silver‑medal level mathematical reasoning, questions arise about its potential in other domains that require similar abstract thought—legal analysis, medical diagnosis, strategic planning, among others.

DeepMind’s track record includes AI that defeated world champions in Go, predicted protein structures with high accuracy, and contributed to the control of nuclear fusion experiments. Each milestone has reduced the gap between tasks once thought exclusive to human intellect and those now within the reach of machines.

While the silver medals fall short of gold, the margin between the two is modest, and the gap between this year’s performance and the next may be even smaller. The IMO has long served as a benchmark for human intellectual achievement; this year’s outcome redefines that benchmark, indicating that AI is rapidly approaching the frontier of high‑level mathematical problem‑solving.
