Brett Adcock launched Figure in 2022. Three years later, the company’s humanoid robots have appeared at the White House, a development that reflects deliberate strategic positioning.
On February 20, Figure introduced Helix, an artificial intelligence model enabling its robots to comprehend natural language instructions. No programming or remote operation is required. A simple verbal request, such as “pick up a cup,” prompts the robot to execute the task.
This capability expands the potential customer base for Figure’s machines. The company’s first three robot iterations—Figure 01, 02, and 03—already operate using a vision-language-action system.
Helix represents the second version of that system and can control two robots simultaneously. The practical implication is that a factory floor manager no longer needs a robotics engineer on site. A warehouse supervisor can communicate with the robots in the same way she directs her human team.
The labor market is the most immediate area affected. Figure has not disclosed pricing for its robots, but the company’s estimated valuation stands at $39 billion.
That figure assumes a future where humanoid robots are common enough to justify such a valuation. Helix is the technology that could make that future possible. If a robot can understand and act on verbal commands, it can replace jobs that previously required a person to interpret instructions and perform physical tasks—a direct substitution.
Household applications are another target. The report notes that Figure’s robots could enhance quality of life by handling chores.
Helix makes this more realistic. A robot that requires a software engineer to program each action remains a laboratory curiosity. A robot that takes orders from anyone in the room becomes a consumer product. Figure has not yet shipped a home robot, but Helix provides the software foundation that makes such a product conceivable.
The White House appearance is significant. A Figure 03 robot participated in an official event, signaling to investors, regulators, and competitors that the company has access typically unavailable to startups.
It also indicates government scrutiny. Federal agencies will address safety standards, liability, and job displacement. Figure is already present in the discussions where these issues are being shaped.
Helix has two versions: Helix 01 and Helix 02. The report does not specify their differences, but the rapid release of two iterations suggests fast development cycles, typical of AI companies.
This speed means technology is advancing faster than regulation can keep pace. A robot that takes natural-language commands today may handle conversational instructions tomorrow, widening the gap between capability and oversight. Figure has progressed through three robot generations in roughly three years, with Helix now integrated into that hardware.
The combination drives the company’s value. Hardware without effective software is inert; software without reliable hardware is theoretical.
Figure appears to have both functioning at a level that attracted White House attention and a $39 billion valuation. The next key indicator is deployment. The report does not specify who has purchased Figure’s robots or where they are operating.
That information will be more telling than the next model number. A robot working in a real factory, responding to actual commands from real workers, differs significantly from one featured in a demo video.
Helix strengthens the demo’s credibility, but the true test remains the factory floor.
