Midjourney announces plan for ultrasound body scanners in medical spa network

The company behind the viral AI image generator Midjourney is betting that people will pay for a spa day and walk out with a full-body medical scan. The plan, announced June 18 in San Francisco, is to build a network of medical spa centers anchored by a new ultrasound-based whole-body scanner. The stakes are simple: make advanced diagnostics as routine as a haircut, or fail to convince a skeptical public and medical establishment.

The core technology is called the Midjourney Scanner. It works on ultrasound tomography.

A person stands on a platform. They are slowly lowered into water. A ring of hundreds of thousands of ultrasound sensors surrounds them.

No radiation. No powerful magnetic fields.

The sound waves collect a huge amount of data and build a three-dimensional model of internal tissues. The company claims the resulting images will be comparable in quality to an MRI, but tens of times faster and cheaper. They say the technology already exists and is being tested.

That speed claim is central. An MRI can take 30 minutes or more, depending on the scan. The Midjourney Scanner, according to the company’s management, could take about 60 seconds.

At that speed, scanning could become so accessible that people might undergo it regularly — even every day. The practical upshot is that people could regularly collect data about their bodies.

That data stream, rather than a one-off diagnostic snapshot, is the real product here. The spa concept is the delivery mechanism. The first Midjourney Spa is planned for San Francisco as early as 2027.

It will offer saunas, jacuzzis, and cold plunge pools. There will be rooms with a “golden light” where body scanning happens at the same time.

The company’s idea is to turn medical diagnostics from an unpleasant procedure into part of ordinary rest and health care. If you are already paying for a spa day, the scan is an add-on, not a separate anxiety-producing appointment. What is at risk is the basic economics of medical imaging.

MRI machines cost millions to buy and install. They require specially trained technicians. They need dedicated rooms with magnetic shielding.

A single scan can cost a patient or insurer thousands of dollars. If Midjourney’s scanner works as claimed — cheaper, faster, and without radiation — it could undercut that entire model.

It could also make regular full-body scanning economically feasible for the first time. That changes the question from “Do I need a scan?” to “Why not get one?” The medical establishment will have its own questions. Image quality is the obvious one.

MRI produces very high-resolution soft-tissue images. Ultrasound tomography is a different modality.

The company says the quality will be comparable. That claim will need to survive independent testing and peer review. There is also the question of interpretation.

A 60-second full-body scan generates a massive amount of data. Who reads it? A radiologist?

An AI? The company’s management has not detailed that part of the workflow.

Then there is the spa model itself. Medical spas are a growing industry, but they are not typically associated with serious diagnostics. The idea of combining a jacuzzi with a medical scan will strike some as gimmicky.

Others may see it as a way to lower the psychological barrier to regular health monitoring. The company is betting on the latter.

The first Midjourney Spa in San Francisco will be the test case. For now, the project is called Midjourney Medical. It is a new direction for a company known for generating images from text prompts.

Whether that expertise in AI image generation translates to accurate medical imaging is the open question. The company says the technology works. The spa is planned.

The scanning time is measured in seconds. The implications for cost and access are enormous.

The proof will come when the first patient steps onto that platform and is lowered into the water.
