Adobe data shows 98.3 percent surge in AI chat traffic during Prime Day

NEW YORK — A single number keeps surfacing in the retail data from the four-day Prime Day window that ended Thursday: 98.3 percent. That is the jump in traffic from AI-powered chat services and browsers compared to the same period last year. It is not an incremental bump.

It is nearly a doubling. The figure comes from Adobe, which tracks online spending across the top 100 U.S. retailers.

The company now projects total online spending for the June 23-26 stretch at $26.3 billion. That is 9 percent growth year-over-year, or $2.5 billion more than last year. But the headline number masks the force driving it.

Generative AI is not an experiment anymore. It is the engine.

Shoppers using AI tools to compare products, filter deals and make purchase decisions converted at a rate 50.7 percent higher than those arriving from non-AI sources. They spent 49.9 percent longer on retail sites. They viewed 20.5 percent more pages per visit.

The behavior is different. Slower browsing, faster buying. Amazon itself started as an online bookstore.

Its market capitalization now sits at roughly $2.52 trillion. That transformation is old news.

What matters now is how the company and its competitors are using generative AI to reshape the shopping floor itself. The opening day alone, June 23, brought $8.3 billion in online spending. That is a 5.3 percent increase over last year.

To put that in context: consumers spent $6.4 billion online on Thanksgiving last holiday season. Prime Day’s opening day blew past that.

Black Friday hit $11.8 billion. Cyber Monday hit $14.2 billion. The four-day Prime window is now in the same weight class as the holiday season.

Buy Now Pay Later services also grew. They accounted for 6.5 percent of online orders, generating $668 million in revenue. That is up 7.6 percent year-over-year.

But BNPL is a supporting player. The main story is the AI traffic.

Retail discounts held steady, roughly matching last year’s levels. So the surge in spending is not coming from deeper price cuts. It is coming from higher-intent traffic.

AI tools are steering shoppers toward decisions faster. The conversion numbers make that plain.

The 98.3 percent traffic jump is the sharpest signal yet that generative AI has moved from novelty to infrastructure in e-commerce. Shoppers are not just browsing with these tools. They are buying.

And they are buying more per visit. Adobe’s data covers the full retail landscape, not just Amazon. But Amazon’s Prime Day is the catalyst.

The company runs the event. Competitors match it.

The whole sector moves on that calendar. And this year, the sector moved on AI. The numbers are not subtle.

A 98.3 percent increase in AI-driven traffic. A 50.7 percent better conversion rate.

Nearly 50 percent more time on site. These are not marginal gains. They represent a structural shift in how people shop online.

Whether that shift holds beyond Prime Day is the open question. But for four days in late June, the data shows a clear answer: generative AI changed the math of online retail.
