AI ads boost Meta revenue via machine learning targeting

MENLO PARK, July 12 — The figure that matters in Meta’s advertising business is $48.4 billion. That was the company’s advertising revenue for the fourth quarter of 2024, up 21% year-over-year. Analysts estimate that AI-powered tools accounted for roughly 30% of that growth.

The bottom line: Meta’s AI-driven advertising platform, including its Advantage+ automated ad buying system launched in 2022, has become the primary engine of the company’s revenue. Meta’s ad business now represents over 97% of its total revenue.

By the numbers, the scale is enormous. Meta’s AI system processes over 100 petabytes of data daily to optimize ad placement, targeting, and bidding in real time. The company uses machine learning models that adjust ad delivery continuously, aiming to improve performance for advertisers.

Investors will note that average revenue per user in North America reached $13.12 in Q4 2024, up from $11.89 a year earlier. That increase reflects both higher ad prices and more effective targeting enabled by AI systems.

AI-Generated Creative Tools

In February 2025, Meta introduced AI-generated ad creative features. Advertisers can now automatically generate images and text through the platform. The move expands Meta’s AI capabilities beyond ad placement into the actual production of advertising content.

The automated creative tools build on the Advantage+ system, which already handles bidding and targeting. Advertisers using Advantage+ can set campaign goals and budgets, then let Meta’s algorithms determine where and when to show ads.

Revenue Concentration Risk

The concentration of Meta’s revenue in advertising — over 97% — means any disruption to the ad business could have outsized impact. Regulatory actions in the US or Europe, changes to Apple’s privacy policies, or shifts in advertiser spending patterns all pose risks. Meta has pursued diversification into hardware, including virtual reality headsets, and subscription services.

But those businesses remain small relative to advertising. The company’s bet is that AI improvements will continue to drive ad revenue growth faster than competitors can match.

What to Watch Next

The key question for the second half of 2026 is whether Meta can sustain the growth rate from late 2024. The 21% year-over-year increase set a high bar. Analysts will watch Q1 and Q2 2026 results for signs of deceleration or acceleration.

Another factor: how advertisers respond to the AI creative tools introduced in February 2025. If adoption is strong, that could provide an additional revenue lift.

If advertisers are slow to trust AI-generated content, the impact may be delayed. Meta’s data processing capacity — over 100 petabytes daily — gives it a structural advantage in training its AI models. Competitors would need similar infrastructure to match the targeting precision.

That scale barrier is the figure that matters for long-term competitive positioning.
