In a new set of technology predictions for 2026, the IEEE Computer Society suggests that artificial intelligence is evolving beyond its role as a simple tool to become a foundational layer of infrastructure. According to the report, AI is becoming as essential to modern society as cloud computing, the internet, or electricity.

The forecast, which outlines 26 primary trends, highlights a significant shift in how organizational success is measured. The IEEE argues that a company’s competitive edge will no longer depend on its total headcount, but rather on the efficiency with which it utilizes intelligence. This transition includes the integration of AI agents as standard members of professional teams in office environments.

Physical Integration and Emerging Applications

The report notes that the gap between software capabilities and hardware is closing, leading to the scaling of “embodied” or physical AI. This includes the deployment of autonomous systems, drones, and robots across urban centers, logistics, and manufacturing.

Specifically, robotaxis are transitioning toward capital-intensive services in dense urban areas. Other maturing trends include the rise of AI-generated documents, music, and video. Additionally, the emergence of “social AI” is enabling systems that can adjust their tone by reading human emotions.

The IEEE also points to the growth of always-on wearable AI devices, though these advancements bring accompanying concerns regarding privacy.

Critical Barriers and Technical Shifts

Despite this rapid growth, the IEEE identifies two primary constraints that could hinder the scaling of AI infrastructure: trust and power generation. The issue of trust encompasses identity and the provenance of data; the forecast suggests that the infrastructure cannot be sustained without resolving these challenges.

On the technical side, the report highlights a shift toward in-memory computing, which favors performance-per-watt over raw speed. Other emerging technical trends include the development of quantum-safe cryptography and the practical application of AI-enabled digital twins.

High-Impact Sectors and Scientific Discovery

The forecast emphasizes that AI is increasingly driving scientific discovery. While intelligence is being embedded into everything from city management systems to wrist-worn devices, the IEEE identifies engineered therapeutics and medicine as the areas with the most significant potential for impact. Ultimately, the IEEE Computer Society presents a vision of a future where intelligence is integrated into the very fabric of the physical and digital world.

The report concludes that the necessary infrastructure for this AI-driven era is currently under construction, shifting the global conversation toward who will control the essential components of data, energy, and trust.
