SoftBank CEO Son to Chair 500 Billion Stargate AI Project

Masayoshi Son, the chief executive of SoftBank, has been named chairman of the Stargate Project, a joint venture aimed at building artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States. The announcement, made on January 21, 2025, by President Donald Trump, positions Son at the helm of a venture with a target of $500 billion in investment by 2029. The Stargate Project is a collaboration among SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and the investment firm MGX. While OpenAI brings its expertise in AI development—having created ChatGPT—and Oracle contributes cloud computing resources and data center infrastructure, Son’s chairmanship signals SoftBank’s leading role in the venture.

SoftBank operates primarily as a holding company focused on financing and organizing large-scale investments rather than developing technology directly. Son has a track record of making substantial bets, including his early investment in Alibaba and his significant financial commitment to WeWork.

His leadership of the Stargate Project reflects a similar approach to ambitious undertakings. The project itself has been in development since 2022, meaning planning, site selection, and early construction were already underway before the public announcement. The $500 billion target represents the estimated cost of building the physical infrastructure required to support artificial intelligence on a national scale.

This includes data centers, power grids, and research hubs. The scale of the investment has drawn comparisons to the Manhattan Project, though the comparison is focused on the magnitude of the effort and the collaboration between government and private sector rather than secrecy or weapons development.

The Stargate Project is not a research laboratory but an infrastructure initiative designed to position the United States for a future where AI functions as a utility rather than a standalone service. The Trump administration has framed the investment as a matter of national competitiveness, putting political weight behind the venture. Oracle’s involvement provides the venture with a cloud computing partner that has an existing large-scale data center footprint.

MGX adds capital and a long-term investment perspective. Together, the partners combine AI models from OpenAI, financial resources from SoftBank and MGX, and hardware and cloud infrastructure from Oracle.

Risks associated with the project include the possibility of cost overruns and delays, which are common in infrastructure projects of this magnitude. The $500 billion figure is a target rather than a guaranteed amount, and the rapid evolution of AI technology could make some investments obsolete within five years. However, the individuals leading the venture—Son, OpenAI’s leadership, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison—have histories of pursuing ambitious, high-risk strategies.

The potential impact on the average person remains unclear, as infrastructure often goes unnoticed until it fails or enables new capabilities. The Stargate Project’s underlying assumption is that building this infrastructure will create a cycle in which new facilities attract talent, talent drives innovation, and innovation generates opportunities for startups and researchers, accelerating progress across the field.
