A Built-In Assistant Across the World’s Largest Platforms

Rather than asking users to download a separate app or visit a new website, Meta made its assistant a layer inside the applications people already use. Facebook supports more than three billion monthly active users; Instagram accounts for two billion; WhatsApp, 2.78 billion; and Messenger, one billion. By weaving the assistant into those environments, Meta gives its AI an immediate audience that no startup can replicate. The assistant launched in September 2023 in the United States, and throughout 2024 the company expanded it globally. Today, Meta AI is available in 22 countries and supports 12 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, and Hindi.

The technology behind the assistant is Meta’s own family of large language models, known as Llama. These models handle natural language processing tasks such as answering questions, generating images, summarizing text, and even performing actions like making restaurant reservations. The integration is not static. In December 2024, Meta introduced a significant new capability: AI-powered search within WhatsApp. That feature lets users pose questions about their own messages and contacts, effectively turning the messaging app into a searchable repository of personal communications. The company has also signaled plans to introduce AI-generated content recommendations directly into users’ feeds, further merging the assistant with the core social experience.

Plans for Business Services and Ecosystem Expansion

Meta intends to roll out AI-powered customer service tools for businesses on WhatsApp and Messenger. That move would allow companies to automate interactions with customers directly within the messaging platforms, leveraging the same assistant technology that powers consumer features. The business tools represent a logical extension of an AI strategy built not on a standalone product but on enhancing existing digital interactions. By embedding the assistant into communications, content discovery, and commerce, Meta positions itself to shape how both users and companies engage with its ecosystem over the long term.

The numbers alone tell part of the story. At 700 million monthly active users, Meta AI is already one of the most widely used AI assistants in existence. But the company’s leadership sees that figure as a beginning rather than an end. The assistant’s reach, tied as it is to platforms that collectively count their users in the billions, means the potential for further growth is enormous. The assistant remains early in its deployment, with room to expand into additional countries, languages, and use cases.

A Foundation Built on Years of Research

Meta’s current AI strategy rests on a research foundation that dates back more than a decade. The company’s artificial intelligence division began in 2013 as Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research, a unit dedicated to advancing machine learning and related fields. Over time, the group established research labs across multiple cities and contributed to major open-source projects, including the PyTorch framework, which became widely adopted throughout the industry. In 2016, Facebook joined other leading technology companies to form the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society, a collaborative effort aimed at guiding responsible development. Leadership of the research division shifted in 2018, and when the parent company rebranded in 2021, the division was renamed Meta AI.

That long history of investment in fundamental research—rather than a rushed product launch—underpins the assistant’s capabilities. The Llama models that power Meta AI are the direct result of years of work by the same research group. By making the assistant a built-in feature rather than a standalone product, Meta leverages its vast user base to drive adoption while continuing to refine the underlying technology. The strategy also positions the company to expand AI use into areas such as content recommendations and automated business services, ensuring that artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly central part of everyday digital life. As the competitive landscape grows more crowded, Meta’s bet is that the most powerful AI assistant is the one users never have to seek out.
