Sam Altman steered OpenAI through ChatGPT launch and board shake-up

SAN FRANCISCO, July 25 — The corner office at OpenAI has a familiar face again. Sam Altman, the entrepreneur who brought generative AI to the world with ChatGPT, is still running the show. On the ground here in the Mission District, the startup’s headquarters hums with the energy of a company that reshaped an industry — and survived a near-death experience from within.

From Loopt to Y Combinator

Altman’s path here began in Chicago, where he was born in 1985 to a Jewish family. By age four he had moved to Clayton, Missouri. That first computer arrived when he was eight.

He learned to code, attended John Burroughs School in Ladue, and then headed to Stanford to study computer science. He dropped out in 2005, at age 19, to co-found Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile app.

As CEO, he raised more than $30 million in venture capital from investors including Patrick Chung of Xfund, New Enterprise Associates, Sequoia Capital, and Y Combinator. Green Dot Corporation bought Loopt for $43.4 million in March 2012. In 2011, Altman became a part-time partner at Y Combinator.

By 2014 he was its president, replacing co-founder Paul Graham. He pushed to expand YC, aiming to fund 1,000 companies per year and focusing on hard-tech startups.

But by 2018, his growing role at OpenAI pulled him away. Partners complained to Graham that Altman was using his YC position to gain priority in investments. Graham said Altman agreed to leave but resisted.

In March 2019, Altman and YC claimed he had transitioned to chairman. Graham stated Altman was removed due to partners’ mistrust.

The ChatGPT Moment

Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015. He became its CEO in 2019. Then came November 2022: ChatGPT launched, and the AI boom followed.

Altman became a prominent figure overnight, the face of a technology that suddenly seemed to touch everything.

A Turbulent 2023

In 2023, OpenAI’s board ousted him, citing a lack of “consistently candid” communication. The move sparked immediate backlash from employees and investors. Within five days he was reinstated, and a new board formed.

The episode laid bare the volatility of leading a company at the center of a global technological shift. Today, Altman is a billionaire.

His investments span more than 400 companies — Reddit, Worldcoin, Helion Energy, and Instacart among them. He has three siblings: brothers Max and Jack, and sister Ann. His mother Connie Gibstine is a dermatologist; his father Jerry Altman was a real estate broker.

His paternal great-grandfather was born in Płock, Poland. The story is still unfolding.

Altman, now past the shock of 2023, is steering OpenAI deeper into the landscape he helped create. What comes next? The industry watches, and the corner office remains his.
