Denver, October 5 — The University of Colorado Denver is taking significant steps to prepare its students for a future where artificial intelligence plays a major role in the workplace. According to Provost Karen Marrongelle, PhD, building AI fluency is part of the university’s obligation to its students, as it will enable them to adapt to the rapidly changing technological landscape. A sharp rise in AI adoption across various industries has created a growing need for professionals who can develop and use AI technologies responsibly.

The university recognizes this need and is expanding opportunities for students to gain practical skills, technical knowledge, and sound judgment in AI. Think of it like learning to drive a car – it’s not just about knowing how to operate the vehicle, but also about understanding the rules of the road and how to navigate complex situations.

The future of AI will be shaped by people who can ask thoughtful questions, bring different perspectives to complex challenges, and apply sound judgment when deciding how to use AI tools. To achieve this, the university has brought together three units to create the Artificial Intelligence Hub, which will provide a range of resources and opportunities for students to learn about and work with AI.

The AI Hub will offer applied AI learning experiences, interdisciplinary collaborations, student innovation projects, workshops, and hackathons, giving students a comprehensive understanding of AI and its applications. The university has also introduced various programs across disciplines to give students a solid foundation in AI.

These programs include a graduate certificate in advanced AI, an AI and data science track within the master of science in computer science, a major in business intelligence and AI, and an undergraduate certificate in AI and communication. By providing these opportunities, the university aims to give students the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to enter the workforce and make a meaningful contribution to the development and use of AI.

The Department of Philosophy is offering a course called The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which explores what it means to be human in the age of artificial intelligence. This course is an important part of the university’s efforts to prepare students for a future where AI is increasingly prevalent. By examining the ethical implications of AI, students can gain a deeper understanding of the potential consequences of AI adoption and develop the critical thinking skills they need to navigate these complex issues.

In plain terms, the ethics of AI is about considering the potential impact of AI on society and individuals. It’s about thinking carefully about how AI is designed, developed, and used, and making sure that it aligns with human values and principles.

The practical upshot of this is that students who take this course will be better equipped to make informed decisions about AI and its applications, and to contribute to the development of AI in a responsible and ethical way. The university’s efforts to expand AI education are a significant step forward in preparing students for a future where AI is increasingly important. By providing a range of programs and resources, the university is giving students the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of AI and its applications.

The opening of the Artificial Intelligence Hub on October 7 marks an important milestone in this effort, and will provide students with a dedicated space to learn about and work with AI. So what does this mean for students and the wider community?

In short, it means that the university is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
