Anthropic’s Claude Tag proactively reads Gmail and posts Slack updates

Anthropics Claude Tag proactively reads Gmail and posts Slack updates

It can read your Gmail. It can post updates to Slack without you asking. And it can do all of this inside a public chat thread where your entire team can see it.

Anthropic’s new Claude Tag, launched inside Salesforce’s Slack app, is an AI agent designed to be summoned like a coworker. Type “@Claude” in a Slack thread, and the agent appears.

It reads the conversation. It breaks down tasks. It flags relevant updates across the organization — proactively, without being prompted.

This is not a chatbot waiting for a question. This is an agent that watches the work happening around it and inserts itself when it finds something useful.

Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code, described using the tool by giving it access to her Gmail account. The agent reads her messages, flags important ones, and posts updates to her on Slack — where she is more responsive. That is the core of what Rob Seaman, general manager of Slack, calls “making AI multiplayer.” The AI participates in open conversations, not just private one-on-one interactions.

The stakes here are about control. Who decides what an AI agent can see? Who decides when it can act?

Administrators get tight control over the data and tools Claude Tag can access in each channel. That is not a small detail — it is the difference between a useful assistant and a security liability.

For businesses looking to integrate AI into workflows, that level of control is the whole ballgame. Anthropic is betting big on enterprise demand. The company filed confidentially for an initial public offering earlier this month.

The Claude Tag launch is a direct move to deepen its push into the business market, where early demand for its AI tools has been strong. Slack, owned by Salesforce, is the beachhead.

But Anthropic plans to bring this capability to other platforms in the coming weeks. Think about what this means for a typical workday. An AI agent that can read your email, monitor your Slack channels, and post updates without being told — it changes the rhythm of work.

Not just the speed, but the structure. Who sees what. Who gets looped in.

Who gets left out. Wu’s example is telling.

She uses Claude Tag to bridge the gap between her email inbox and her Slack workspace. The agent becomes a kind of personal secretary that never sleeps, never misses a message, and never forgets to flag something. That is powerful.

It is also the kind of tool that, if misconfigured, could flood a team with irrelevant updates or expose sensitive data to the wrong channel. Anthropic is aware of this.

The tight administrative controls are designed to prevent exactly that kind of problem. But the rollout will test whether those controls are enough. Businesses will have to decide how much access to grant, in which channels, and to what end.

Those decisions will shape whether Claude Tag becomes a productivity multiplier or a source of noise. The launch marks a significant step forward in enterprise AI tools. Not because of the technology alone, but because of the model of interaction.

Tagging an AI like a coworker, giving it a seat at the table, letting it read the room — that is a shift in how people and machines work together. Anthropic is moving fast, with an IPO in the works and a product that puts AI inside the daily flow of business communication.

How businesses adapt will determine whether this is the beginning of something big or just another integration.
