Report: Nigerian Brands Face AI Reputation Risks, Opportunities

LAGOS, July 1 — A new global report from Burson, a communications firm, has found that visibility in artificial intelligence-generated search results does not guarantee trust. The research, titled “The Credibility Paradox”, examined how audiences perceive information produced by AI platforms. The report is built on more than 55,000 believability scores across 85 companies and seven major AI answer platforms.

It measured how AI-generated responses influence perceptions across eight levers of Burson’s Reputation Capital Framework: Innovation, Creativity, Workplace, Products, Financial Performance, Governance, Citizenship, and Leader. According to the report, the findings carry particular weight for Nigeria.

The country had 109 million internet users as of the end of 2025, representing 45.5 percent internet penetration, alongside 47.8 million social media user identities. With a median age of 18.1 and a majority-urban population, the market is increasingly shaped by fast-moving, mobile-first information discovery and evaluation. “For Nigerian companies, this means corporate reputation can increasingly be shaped by what AI tools say about a brand,” the report states.

“As more consumers, investors, regulators and professionals turn to AI-powered platforms for information, the quality, credibility and consistency of a brand’s digital footprint have become critical business assets.” The research underscores a growing divergence between visibility and credibility in AI-driven environments. A brand may appear prominently in AI-generated responses, the data suggests, but that does not automatically confer believability among audiences.

The report arrives as digital behaviour in Nigeria expands quickly across individuals, businesses, institutions, and public figures. The demographic profile — young, urban, mobile-first — creates conditions where AI platforms increasingly mediate how brands are discovered and evaluated. For Nigerian brands, the report makes clear that reputation management in the AI era requires more than search engine optimisation or content volume.

The credibility of a brand’s digital footprint, according to the research, has become a critical business asset.
