Build apps, workflows, and agents together

Seattle, October 8, 2026 Microsoft unveils a game-changing platform, Copilot Studio, at the upcoming Microsoft Ignite 2026 event. Scheduled for November 17–20, this innovation is set to revolutionize the way organizations build apps, workflows, and agents. In plain terms, think of Copilot Studio as a unified workspace that allows you to design business apps, automate workflows, and create intelligent agents—all within a single platform.

Previously focused on creating conversational experiences, the platform now supports end-to-end business process transformation. Here’s what it means for makers: you can now describe your desired business outcomes in natural language and let the platform generate draft apps.

These drafts can be refined conversationally while still retaining access to the underlying code for deeper customization. These apps can be combined with deterministic workflows and adaptive agents within a single solution. For example, an onboarding process might use an app for structured user interfaces, workflows for repeatable steps, and an agent to answer questions and handle exceptions.

The updates include the public preview of Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime, which provides Microsoft-operated hosting, identity management, governed data access, lifecycle management, Git-backed versioning, and centralized visibility for apps built across Copilot Studio, Copilot Cowork, and Copilot Code. This support ensures secure and reliable enterprise deployment without lowering the barrier to entry for makers.

For agents, hooks are now in preview for those powered by the GitHub Copilot harness. These hooks offer deterministic control at key points in an agent’s lifecycle—such as session start, tool calls, and errors—by allowing makers to load context, inspect or block tool calls, transform results, or respond to failures. This ensures consistent logic runs while preserving agentic reasoning.

The Foundry IQ integration with Copilot Studio is now generally available, allowing agents to retrieve information from a reusable knowledge base with citations for grounded responses, and to connect securely via private networking for enterprise isolation. Evaluation capabilities in Copilot Studio have expanded beyond agent conversations to include automation, enabling assessment of individual AI nodes and broader processes.

New metrics include Task Completion (whether the agent achieved the intended user outcome), Tool Accuracy (whether it selected expected tools and inputs), Safety (responses against configurable content safety thresholds), and Latency (response time). A Custom Graders Library allows reusable, tenant-specific graders, and Copilot Studio can generate custom graders for specific agents and evaluation scenarios, reducing the need to write criteria from scratch.

These updates aim to bridge the gap between frontline expertise and production-ready solutions by unifying app, workflow, and agent development under shared security, governance, and operational controls. In the coming weeks, keep an eye on how these updates reshape the business landscape, making it easier for organizations to leverage AI for transformative process improvements.
