Fiber, AI leading to unprecedented usage and growth: FBA report

WASHINGTON, June 26 — Two “simultaneous infrastructure supercycles” — the mass rollout of fiber broadband and the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence — are now feeding off each other at historic scale, according to a new white paper from the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA). The report, released this week by FBA president and CEO Gary Bolton, argues these twin forces are fundamentally reshaping economic infrastructure.

Its title gets at the scale of what’s happening: “Building the Nervous System of a Thinking Economy: How the Convergence of Fiber Broadband & Artificial Intelligence Is Reshaping Economic Infrastructure.” Think of it like building both the highway and the self-driving cars at the same time — each one makes the other more valuable, and neither works without the other.

Record fiber buildout

The numbers on the fiber side are striking. The FBA, working with RVA Market Research, found that U.S. fiber providers passed a record 11.8 million homes in 2025. That brought total U.S. fiber passings to 98.4 million — including multiple passings — and 84.6 million unique homes.

That works out to 11% annual growth. In plain terms, fiber is no longer a niche technology for early adopters.

It’s becoming the backbone of how Americans connect, just as AI starts demanding more bandwidth than ever.

AI spending in the billions

On the AI side, the white paper points to eye-popping capital expenditures from the biggest tech companies. Amazon alone reported $131.8 billion in capital expenditures last year, much of it directed at AI infrastructure, AWS data centers, networking equipment and custom AI chips. The executive summary offers similarly impressive numbers for Alphabet, Meta and OpenAI.

The practical upshot: these two sectors are reinforcing each other. Fiber networks need the traffic that AI generates to justify their buildout costs.

AI applications need the low-latency, high-capacity connections that only fiber can deliver at scale.

What it means for communities

The white paper describes how this convergence is expanding into other areas, each with its own unique requirements. For network operators and infrastructure investors, it means a long-term bet on both technologies. For communities, it raises questions about who gets connected first — and who might get left behind.

The central thesis, as the white paper puts it, is straightforward: “Fiber is no longer simply an access technology.” It’s becoming the nervous system of an economy that increasingly thinks for itself. For policymakers, the report signals that decisions made now about fiber deployment could shape AI access for years to come.

The two supercycles are happening simultaneously, and the window to get the infrastructure right may not stay open forever.
