Background and why it matters
Google DeepMind is an artificial intelligence research laboratory and a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. The organization began as a British startup in 2010 with the goal of creating general-purpose AI. Google acquired the company in 2014. In April 2023, it merged with the Google Brain division to form the current entity.
The lab early on focused on reinforcement learning. It taught systems to play Atari games without prior instructions. This approach led to the creation of AlphaGo, which defeated a world champion in 2016. Later, the team developed AlphaFold to predict protein structures. These efforts moved the company from gaming experiments toward scientific discovery and large language models.
This evolution matters because the lab now produces tools that automate complex creative and technical tasks. Its work spans text, image, music, and video generation. As these models become more capable, they change how people produce digital media and conduct scientific research.
