OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Faces Apple’s Trade Secret Allegations

Sam Altman

SAN FRANCISCO, July 11 — The figure that matters in Sam Altman’s career is $13 billion. That is the sum Microsoft invested in OpenAI after Altman took over as CEO in 2019, money that transformed a nonprofit research lab into the most valuable private AI company in the world. The bottom line: Altman, now 41, has become the central figure in the commercial artificial intelligence boom, for better and for worse.

Altman was born in Chicago on April 22, 1985. He studied computer science at Stanford but dropped out in 2005 to co-found Loopt, a location-based social networking app.

Green Dot Corporation acquired Loopt in 2012 for $43.4 million. That exit was modest by Silicon Valley standards, but it put Altman on a trajectory that would lead him to the presidency of Y Combinator in February 2014. At Y Combinator, he oversaw investments in startups that became household names: Airbnb, Dropbox, and Stripe.

The OpenAI Bet

Altman co-founded OpenAI on December 11, 2015, alongside Elon Musk and others. The organization was originally structured as a nonprofit, with a mission to develop artificial general intelligence safely. By 2019, Altman had become CEO and led a controversial transition to a capped-profit model.

That restructuring unlocked the Microsoft investment — over $13 billion — and set the stage for a series of product launches that would capture global attention. By the numbers, the product timeline is striking.

OpenAI launched GPT-3 in June 2020. ChatGPT followed in November 2022. GPT-4 arrived in March 2023.

Each release was larger and more capable than the last, and ChatGPT in particular became the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Investors will note that these products did not emerge from a vacuum — they were built on years of research and billions in capital.

The Boardroom Coup

In November 2023, OpenAI’s board briefly fired Altman. The decision was sudden and unexplained in detail, but employees protested en masse. Within days, the board reinstated him.

The episode exposed deep fractures inside the company between those who prioritized safety and those who pushed for rapid commercialization. Altman has publicly advocated for AI regulation and safety, even as his company races to deploy increasingly powerful systems.

That tension remains unresolved. The Apple lawsuit accuses OpenAI of using stolen trade secrets, a charge Altman has denied publicly. The case is ongoing, and it adds legal risk to a company already navigating intense regulatory scrutiny in the United States and Europe.

Beyond OpenAI

Altman does not limit himself to artificial intelligence. He is involved in Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project that uses iris scanning to verify identity. He has also invested in Helion Energy, a nuclear fusion company.

These bets reflect a broader worldview: Altman believes that transformative technologies — AI, crypto, clean energy — will reshape the global economy, and he is positioning himself at the center of each wave. What to watch next: the Apple lawsuit’s trajectory, the next GPT release, and whether Altman can hold together a company that nearly fired him two and a half years ago.

The figure that matters may soon change.
