Oracle Partners with NVIDIA, Cohere, xAI for AI Growth

SANTA CLARA, July 31 — Oracle’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence rests on a simple bet: the companies building the next wave of AI need enormous computing power, and Oracle wants to be the one supplying it. At the centre of that strategy sits NVIDIA, the dominant designer of graphics processing units, whose chips have become indispensable for the intensive computational demands of AI model training.

Through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, the company provides NVIDIA with a high-performance computing environment built around vast clusters of its own GPUs — the very hardware NVIDIA needs to develop and test next-generation AI technologies. The arrangement is mutual. Oracle gets its cloud optimized for the most advanced AI workloads; NVIDIA gets a testing ground at a scale few others can match.

More than hardware

But Oracle’s AI portfolio extends well beyond its partnership with the GPU giant. The company has also forged partnerships with prominent AI startups, including Cohere, which specializes in enterprise-grade large language models. Cohere runs its sophisticated models on OCI, tapping into Oracle’s dedicated infrastructure and scalable resources without the burden of managing its own extensive computing systems. The deal lets the startup pour its energy into AI innovation rather than server upkeep.

Then comes the marquee name. Oracle has secured a high-profile agreement to provide cloud services for xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. That collaboration positions Oracle as a critical enabler for xAI’s ambitious projects, including the development of its Grok large language model.

The commercial logic shows up in the ledgers. In Oracle’s Q3 fiscal 2024 earnings report, released in March 2024, cloud revenue grew 25% to $5.6 billion, with OCI revenue jumping 49% to $1.8 billion.

Foundational ambitions

These alliances are not side projects. They are central to Oracle’s strategy of becoming a foundational cloud provider for the AI industry — a company that can attract and support a diverse range of AI innovators, from the established hardware giant NVIDIA to hungry startups and the deep-pocketed ambitions of xAI.

The stakes are sizable. The partnerships demonstrate that Oracle can win business across the AI spectrum, and the revenue figures suggest momentum. The real question for the months ahead is whether Oracle can sustain that growth as demand for AI computing continues to climb — and whether the companies powering their models on OCI keep scaling with it.

That competition matters far beyond corporate boardrooms. The cost and availability of AI computing infrastructure will shape which startups, researchers and developers across Asia can build and deploy their own AI tools — and how quickly the region’s AI ecosystem can move from experiments to real-world products. For now, Oracle’s answer has been to lock in the players who matter most, one partnership at a time.
