San Francisco, September 1 — Anthropic’s Claude family of AI models has reached a new milestone in capability and adoption, reflecting rapid growth in both technology and market impact. The latest generation — Claude Sonnet 5, Opus 5, and Fable 5 — builds on earlier versions with training data updated through May 2026 for Opus 5 and January 2026 for Sonnet 5. These models power a chatbot and AI assistant designed to answer questions, generate content, translate languages, write code, and help with everyday tasks like changing a tire.
Named after Claude E. Shannon, the ‘father of information theory,’ Claude was created by Anthropic, a San Francisco-based company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers Dario and Daniela Amodei.
Dario Amodei serves as CEO, having previously led research at OpenAI, while Daniela Amodei holds the role of president. The company has drawn major backing from tech giants, including $8 billion from Amazon by 2024 and an additional $5 billion in 2026, with plans for up to $20 billion more in total investment. AWS remains Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner, while Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia have also committed billions.
By August 31, 2026, Anthropic reported annualized revenue surpassing $30 billion, up from about $9 billion at the end of 2025. The company is reportedly considering an initial public offering by the end of 2026.
Claude supports file uploads of documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, and images for summarization, analysis, or contextual use in conversations. While it can analyze images and assist in creating visual layouts, it does not generate images or video natively — a distinction from competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. Web search has been available across free and paid plans since March 2025, enhancing responses without replacing core training data.
Beyond the chat window, Claude operates through over 200 Connectors linking to services such as Instacart, Uber, Spotify, and Google Workspace. It integrates directly with Microsoft 365 apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Features like Projects help users organize chats and source materials, Artifacts provide dedicated workspaces for AI-generated content like code and diagrams, and Skills allow saving recurring instructions.
Its agentic capabilities include Cowork, available on select paid plans, which performs multi-step tasks using a built-in browser when direct app connections aren’t available, and Claude Tag, which lets the AI join Slack workspaces as a user to interact with channels and tools. Claude was named CNET’s best chatbot of 2026 for its consistency in handling both casual and complex tasks with detailed responses, and Claude Code was highlighted for its speed in code generation — though, like similar tools, it does not always fix errors it introduces.
Looking ahead, the focus remains on expanding real-world utility while maintaining reliability, as Anthropic positions itself at the forefront of AI development with strong financial backing and growing enterprise adoption.
