OpenAI Unveils GPT-6 Astra, Boosting Coding and Math Skills

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 3 — OpenAI on Wednesday unveiled GPT-6 Astra, a new model the company is calling “the world’s most intelligent and aligned model.” The announcement lands just over a year after the first GPT-5 models reached ChatGPT. In an official release, OpenAI said Astra brings together years of research across pre-training, reinforcement learning, and alignment. The company describes the model as state-of-the-art on computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work.

On benchmarks, OpenAI cites a 98% score on FrontierMath Tier 4, a 99.9% score on ARC-AGI-3, and a 100% score on ExploitBench. The company also says Astra has already helped solve long-standing open problems in mathematics.

Computer use gets a desktop upgrade

The model is built to push ChatGPT beyond the chat window. OpenAI says Astra allows ChatGPT to operate on a user’s Mac or other desktop — including in the background while the person keeps working. Think of it like a capable assistant that can actually sit at the keyboard with you, rather than one that only answers questions.

That computer-use capability is paired with targeted training for professional environments. OpenAI says Astra can handle complex work tasks such as producing polished documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

The company also calls GPT-6 Astra “the best model for software engineering to date.”

Codex gets a longer memory

For Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding assistant, Astra introduces an experimental feature aimed at a long-standing pain point: what happens when the context window fills up during a long session. Historically, models used compaction, summarizing the work so far — a process that could drop details about why a fix failed or how a component behaves. With Astra, Codex can keep notes across context windows, preserving accumulated details without repeatedly compressing them into a single summary.

Earlier context windows remain searchable, so Astra can pull up requirements or test results from previous messages and tool outputs, even if that information was not captured in its notes. The feature can be enabled in Codex now and is set to become the default for Astra in the coming weeks.

OpenAI made the announcement through an official release and social media posts, including a tweet stating the model is “best in class at computer use, scientific research, coding, math, professional work like making slides, and so much more.” The question now is how quickly Astra’s desktop and coding capabilities move from announcement to everyday workflow — and whether the be
