ChatGPT maintains growth as Gemini and Claude narrow its conversation lead

NEW YORK, September 29 — The artificial intelligence landscape continues to evolve rapidly, with new data showing ChatGPT losing ground to competitors while expanding its user base. ChatGPT remains the leading general-purpose AI platform in the U.S. market by prompt volume, but its dominance has weakened according to the Comscore AI Intelligence Report based on second-quarter 2026 data. ChatGPT’s share of total prompts across major AI platforms declined from 70% in January 2026 to 50% in June 2026.

The shifting landscape reflects changing user preferences and technological capabilities. During the same period, Gemini’s prompt share rose from 17% to 30%, and Claude’s increased from 5% to 11%, while Microsoft Copilot remained steady at 5%.

The report clarifies that these figures reflect prompt volume, not user count or conversation frequency. Notably, average conversation in Claude generates about 9.1 prompts, compared to 6.2 in Gemini and 5.4 in ChatGPT.

User Growth Despite Prompt Decline

Despite the drop in prompt share, ChatGPT’s mobile visitor base in the U.S. grew from 25 million in June 2025 to 47 million in June 2026. This expansion demonstrates that while users may be engaging with ChatGPT less frequently per session, the platform continues to attract new users. Gemini added approximately five million mobile visitors over the same period, increasing from 14 million to 19 million.

Copilot rose from 9 million to 11 million mobile visitors, and Claude tripled its audience from 1 million to 3 million.

AI Integration in Search and Commerce

The report also highlights growing AI integration in search engines. AI-powered answers appeared in 39.4% of desktop searches on Google in June 2026, up 14 points year-over-year, and in 17.3% of Bing searches, up 5.5 points. Disparities exist between source inclusion and citation in AI-generated answers.

For lodging queries, Tripadvisor appeared as a source in 61% of responses but was cited as a link in only 21%. Hotels.com was sourced in 50% and cited in 18%; Expedia in 46% and 16%; and Booking.com in 33% and 9%.

E-commerce behavior also shows AI’s growing influence. Thirty-five percent of buyers who purchased home and decor items had visited an AI assistant in the prior 30 days, and 14% had an AI conversation about furniture and decor during the same session as their purchase. For other categories, the share of users who conversed with an AI about the purchased item during the same shopping session was 12% for books, music, and video; 10% for office supplies; and 4% for toys and hobbies.

The AI landscape continues to transform how Americans search for information, shop, and interact with digital platforms, with the Comscore report providing valuable insights into these evolving behaviors.
