ABU DHABI, November 2, 2026 — The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi sat beside Sam Altman on Monday and watched his national oil company become the first energy firm on the planet to put OpenAI’s Frontier platform to work. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed witnessed the signing at ADIPEC, where ADNOC, G42 and OpenAI agreed to weave advanced AI agents into the daily rhythm of upstream operations.
A Handshake Built On Years Of Quiet Work
This did not happen overnight. ADNOC has been laying pipe for this moment since 2019, when it formed AIQ with G42 to build AI tools for the oil patch. The joint venture, sixty percent owned by ADNOC and forty percent by G42, developed ENERGYai, a subsurface platform that already knows the company’s reservoirs better than most geologists. Now Frontier will sit on top of that foundation, connecting reservoir intelligence with surface facilities, capital plans and commercial desk decisions in a single breath.
For families in the Emirates, the human side of this deal starts with the workforce. ADNOC has already rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise to more than forty thousand employees, the largest such deployment in the Middle East and North Africa, with adoption above ninety-seven percent. The new partnership includes co-developing AI solutions while training the people who will deploy and use them, keeping human experts in charge of consequential decisions.
From Months To Hours In Field Planning
The first target is field master planning. Today that process moves in sequence — subsurface study, then facilities study, then economic study — each taking months. Frontier’s reasoning models will integrate decades of data across thousands of wells, stacked reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities, layering in capital, cost and commercial variables all at once. Full-field development plans that once crawled can now be prepared and optimized in hours, with the whole field optimized together instead of reservoir by reservoir.

The second application puts a value on every barrel while it is still in the ground, a first for an energy company. Interconnected agents will continuously forecast crude supply, demand, prices and margins, predict impacts before they land, and weigh the commercial and operational ripple of each decision across production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading — areas that today often speak different data languages.
Cyber Defense And Sovereign Infrastructure
Behind the breakthrough, the agreement also brings OpenAI’s Daybreak Blue initiative to ADNOC’s critical infrastructure, helping security teams spot vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. Every model runs on GPT architecture hosted within G42’s sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE, using in-country inference residency so proprietary data never leaves national borders. Officials emphasized that all solutions operate under ADNOC’s oversight, protecting both data and the energy assets that families rely on.
A Government That Reads Itself
The energy deal was one of four agreements signed Monday, all threaded through G42’s Inception42 subsidiary. In the government sector, Abu Dhabi launched what it calls the world’s first AI-native Machine-Readable Government initiative, translating policies and regulations into a format AI systems can process directly. A pilot is already running at the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority on food imports, with real-time model computation on GPUs inside UAE data centers. Officials retain oversight and accountability for every final decision.
On the investment side, Mubadala, Inception42 and OpenAI will apply advanced AI to investment analysis, opportunity identification and risk assessment. A separate five-year pact between Inception42 and OpenAI aims to broaden frontier AI adoption across government, enterprise and education. Altman told the Crown Prince that Abu Dhabi and the UAE are setting a bold global standard for AI integration across public and private sectors to make sure the benefits of AI reach everyone.
The Connective Tissue
G42, founded in 2018 and based in Abu Dhabi, has become the connective tissue between global AI developers and the UAE’s state-linked economy. The company’s Khazna Data Centres are building the first 200-megawatt compute cluster of Stargate UAE, OpenAI’s first international Stargate deployment, within a five-gigawatt UAE-US AI Campus. G42 chief executive Peng Xiao has framed the ambition in sweeping terms: shifting the UAE from an energy exporter to an intelligence exporter, using AI compute capacity as the engine.
For ADNOC, the immediate stakes are operational. Better seismic interpretation and production forecasts mean better drilling decisions and fewer expensive guesses. The company sits on a resource competitors cannot easily replicate — decades of its own field data. The multi-year partnership announced Monday turns that history into a living advantage, one that starts with the engineers and analysts who know the reservoirs best. The first 200-megawatt stage of Stargate UAE is planned for completion by 2026.
