Meta Reality Labs Loses $16.6B in 2024 Despite AI Push

Menlo Park Headquarters

MENLO PARK — Meta’s Reality Labs division, the unit responsible for augmented and virtual reality hardware, posted an operating loss of $16.6 billion in 2024. That is deeper than the $13.7 billion loss it reported the year before. The figures come from the company’s 2024 financial disclosures, and they show a division still investing heavily in building the technologies that may define the next era of computing.

The losses, while substantial, are part of a long-term strategy that Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg outlined publicly in February 2025. He said Reality Labs would integrate artificial intelligence into its products, including AI-powered virtual assistants for the metaverse and AI-enhanced augmented reality glasses.

The encouraging part for investors and technology watchers is that revenue is growing. The division brought in $2.1 billion in 2024, up from $1.9 billion in 2023, driven by sales of the Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets, as well as the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses that launched in September 2023.

How Reality Labs fits into Meta’s larger picture

Reality Labs employs roughly 17,000 people as of 2024. That is a significant workforce dedicated to hardware and software that, for now, operates at a loss. Meta’s total operating income for 2024 was $49.8 billion.

The Family of Apps segment — which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger — generated operating income of $66.4 billion. That profitable core business effectively subsidises the Reality Labs division’s heavy spending on research, development, and product launches.

This structure is not unusual for a company pursuing a long-term bet. The early findings from the market suggest that consumers are gradually adopting VR and AR products, though the pace has not yet made the division profitable.

What the numbers tell us

Revenue growth from 2023 to 2024 is a positive sign. The Quest line of headsets remains the primary revenue driver, alongside the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which mark Meta’s entry into the consumer smart eyewear market. The division’s losses, however, remind us that building new hardware categories from scratch is expensive.

Component costs, manufacturing scale, and software development all contribute to the bottom line. Zuckerberg’s February 2025 announcement about AI integration signals where the company believes the future lies.

Adding AI-powered virtual assistants to the metaverse and enhancing AR glasses with artificial intelligence could make these products more useful in daily life. For now, the company is investing ahead of demand, hoping that improved functionality will attract more users over time. The encouraging part for those following this space is that Meta has the financial resources to sustain these investments.

The Family of Apps segment’s $66.4 billion operating income provides a comfortable cushion.

Looking ahead

Reality Labs continues to develop its hardware and software roadmaps. The integration of AI into AR and VR products is still in its early stages, and the market for these devices remains relatively niche compared to smartphones or personal computers. Meta faces competition from other technology companies also investing in AR and VR, but its willingness to absorb significant losses while building the ecosystem sets it apart.

The next few years will show whether the division’s strategy pays off. For now, the numbers tell a story of a company that believes deeply in the potential of augmented and virtual reality, and is willing to spend billions to make that vision a reality.
