UCLA alumnus creates AI app \u2018Neural Consult\u2019 to ease medical school stress

Los Angeles, October 7 — A growing number of medical students are turning to an AI-powered study tool created by a fellow trainee to prepare for the rigors of clinical exams and patient care, reflecting a shift in how future doctors learn. Arman Hussain, a medical student at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and a UCLA alumnus, co-developed Neural Consult through the startup Dendritic Health AI.

The app was built to address gaps he noticed in traditional study methods, drawing on his time in an evolutionary medicine lab as an undergraduate where he learned to value real user feedback over assumptions. Neural Consult offers AI-generated flashcards, board-style questions, and clinical simulation tools that let users diagnose virtual patients in realistic scenarios.

It also provides citations for all generated information, a feature Dr. Jonathan Theros, CEO of Dendritic Health AI and an internal medicine resident at Massachusetts General Hospital, emphasized as key to reducing the risk of AI inaccuracies. The platform has partnered with medical, physician assistant, pharmacy, and dental programs to create customized versions aligned with specific school curricula. These tailored tools help students study material that matches what they are taught in class, rather than relying on generic resources.

Hussain said he uses the app’s patient interaction simulator himself to prepare for clinical examinations, which involve diagnosing actors in realistic clinical settings. This hands-on practice helps bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world patient encounters.

Beyond studying, Neural Consult has hosted community-building mixers in New York City and Los Angeles. Hussain said these events foster peer relationships that are critical to medical training, helping students connect across programs and share experiences in an often-isolating journey. Tiffany Chen, a UCLA medical student, noted that AI tools like Neural Consult are valued for their ability to synthesize and personalize study material, contrasting with older methods such as highlighting and annotating textbooks.

She described the shift as a meaningful change in how students engage with complex information. According to Theros, the overarching goal of Neural Consult is to train better doctors and improve patient outcomes by providing a tool built by medical students, for medical students. The approach reflects a broader trend of trainees shaping the technology they use in education.

The original post detailing these facts was updated on October 4 at 11:51 p.m. As of now, the app continues to expand its reach among health professional programs, with developers focusing on refining features based on actual user behavior — an evolutionary approach Hussain said was inspired by his lab work at UCLA.
